2 out of 5 Young Australians

Updated: Mar 8, 2023

That's close to 40%.

It's the lifetime prevalence of common mental disorders in Australians ages 16-85 years.

But what's really startling is that this is also the 12 month prevalence of common mental disorders in the last 12 months in young Australians 16-24 years.

These figures come from the National Survey of Heath and Wellbeing 2020/21.

The story is much more complex - in all measures young people are experiencing mental illnesses at greater rate and intensity than other age groups.
